Custom Training Courses

We provide custom-designed courses for organisations of all sizes – from small businesses, through to large enterprises. Our custom-designed courses tailored and contextualised for each client and often include a combination of class-room based learning and practical experiences, incorporating the concepts and principles of integrated water management applied to the particular focal area.

Our Approach

We have provided custom-designed courses to organisations and groups across the world since 2006. In our courses we:

  • Work with our partner organisations or groups to identify their specific training needs and develop a custom-designed course to build the required skills and knowledge
  • Build on participants’ professional experience and improve their ability to solve water-related problems in an integrated manner, utilising the best research and evidence based tools and frameworks
  • Combine interactive classroom learning with experiential learning, to build both knowledge and skills
  • Enable participants to broaden their knowledge of integrated water management, while pursuing particular areas of interest and expertise
  • Provide flexible courses that can be tailored to included any combination of English communication skills, postgraduate-level academic material (non award), field trips, industry placements or technical study tours
  • Use comparative Australian and international case studies to ensure a well-rounded global view of complex integrated water management strategies and issues

Flexible training formats

Our customised training courses are individually designed to match clients’ needs and professional interests. We customise our programs to accommodate participants’ time frame, English skills, location, group size and other requirements.

Our approach is to facilitate highly participative and active learning through a range of classroom workshops (~60% course time) and field-based activities (~40% course time) with scientific experts and industry leaders.

Learning activities can include:

  • Individual research/study projects
  • Field visits with practical activities
  • Case study analysis

We use a range of training venues through-out Australia, depending upon the course topics. Courses longer than 2 weeks usually involve multiple classroom and field venues, such as The University of Queensland (Brisbane), Griffith University (Brisbane, Gold Coast), Stradbroke Island / Minjerribah Research Station (Moreton Bay), Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Sydney, Cairns, Gladstone, Melbourne and rural areas spread across the Murray Darling Basin.

We also develop and deliver in-country customised courses. Recent examples include Indonesia, Nepal and Laos.

Course topics

Courses can be designed to strengthen knowledge and skills in almost any area of water management, particularly integrated water management (IWM), or in one or more specific topics, including:

BAPPENAS Indonesia – Flood Risk Resilience

We developed a 2-week training program for the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, to be delivered to 25 participants, in Australia and Indonesia to build capacity in all aspects of integrated water resources management, with a primary focus on flood risk management.

River health and environmental flow in China

The River Health and Environmental Flow project aimed to establish methods for assessing and improving river health and environmental flows in Chinese rivers.

Protection of rivers and environmental flows in Peru

The Peruvian-based project developed integrated frameworks to help better understand, evaluate and manage the water resources of the Ocoña district in Peru.
