Project overview
The project ‘Protection of rivers and environmental flows in Peru: Ocoña pilot river basin’ developed integrated frameworks to help better understand, evaluate and manage the water resources of the Ocoña district in Peru
Stage two of the project comprised a two-week study tour to Australia for six staff from the ANA. The overall objective was to develop a first-hand experience of river basin management in Australia and to continue to build a technical understanding of water allocation planning and environmental flow management.
Through this process, participants gained an improved understanding and capacity in topics such as:
- water governance, appropriate policy and planning regimes
- water Resource Planning (WRP) decision support tools
- river health and E-flows, including assessment methodologies, modelling tools and implementation strategies
- community engagement and conflict resolution processes
- river health reporting and the importance of multi-stakeholder collaborations on its development
- agricultural practices in South East Queensland, their conflict with other water users (such as mining) and the way water resource plans manage this conflicts.
One of the most important outcomes from the study tour was the development of a framework indicating the next steps to follow in the project’s following stages, both to develop the National E-flows regulation in Peru and the Ocoña’s Water Resources plan.
