IWC-AWA Team Leadership Course for Emerging Water Leaders

About this Course

The International WaterCentre (IWC) and the Australian Water Association (AWA) recognise the pressing need to build leadership capacity in young and emerging water sector leaders to advance more integrated and sustainable forms of water management. During this six-week course, water leadership experts Dr André Taylor and Mr Peter Wegener will introduce participants to key leadership concepts to build their capacity to lead project teams.

What are the course learning outcomes?

After completing this course, you will have: 

  • An understanding of what leadership is and why it is important in the water sector. 
  • Awareness of some of the methods and principles of leadership development that new team leaders need to apply to their own development. 
  • An understanding of, and the ability to apply the fundamentals of self-leadership which is the foundation of all other forms of leadership. 
  • The ability to apply fundamental team leadership concepts and tools to common team leadership challenges. 
  • Awareness of, and the capacity to apply the keys to successful team leadership, including leading virtual teams, and teams that need to be led without much authority (e.g. cross-boundary project teams). 
  • The ability to build a simple leadership development plan to guide one’s development. 
  • The capacity to reflect on the content of the course to identify team leadership-related strengths, weaknesses and specific opportunities to improve

What core topics are offered?

This course is structured into five modules, covering: 

  • Module 1: Introduction to leadership in the water sector and leadership development. 
  • Module 2: Introduction to self-leadership, as the foundation for team leadership. 
  • Module 3: The fundamentals of teams and team leadership. 
  • Module 4: Leading virtual teams and using a team charter. 
  • Module 5: Leading cross-boundary teams (e.g. leading diverse teams with little authority).

In the final week, participants prepare an individual leadership development plan and a reflection report. 

Who is this course suited to?

This course is designed for water professionals who lead project teams and/or a team of staff, either currently or in the near future. In particular, the course will be most helpful to newly appointed team leaders and people who lead cross-boundary teams (e.g. teams that cross boundaries in terms of geography, professional discipline, culture, organisational units, etc.). 

What are the course credentials?

On successful completion of the course, participants are awarded a Griffith University Digital Badge, issued by Credly. 

What does my course schedule look like?

The course commences with a one hour, optional online meeting to get to know each other and introduce the course content and structure. Each week, participants will be given access to new course content, which includes watching some instructional videos and completing 1-3 readings; participating in one of two online discussion activities and completing a short multiple-choice online quiz. There is also an optional online meeting at the end of each week, to discuss the course content for the week. 

The final week of the course includes an optional online meeting to reflect on what has been achieved and celebrate completion. Participants will also prepare and submit an individual leadership development plan and a reflection report. 

Time commitment to fully participate in the course is approximately 3-4 hours per week, which can be completed at your own pace.
