Our online training courses cultivate innovative solutions to complex water management challenges by combining real-world experience in integrated water management with engaging courses, delivered by leading industry experts.

Throughout these courses, we share lessons learnt from working with organisations at an international level, and evidence-based strategies designed and implemented to improve integrated water management. Introduction to Integrated Water Management

Fostering new ways of thinking to sustainably manage the world’s water

Course information

This course will introduce participants to the theory and principles of Integrated Water Management (IWM). It will investigate conceptual frameworks used to critically analyse water management problems and drive sustainable solutions.

Learning objectives

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to understand:

  • the history and evolution of IWM theory and practice
  • principles and frameworks that guide IWM
  • key biophysical and socio-economic processes in the water cycle
  • the complexities associated with water management
  • why integration and systems approaches are required to deal with social and ecological complexities necessary for achieving sustainable development
  • challenges associated with the implementation of IWM and the awareness of how challenges have been overcome in practice.

Water Reform and Governance

Driving innovative solutions to complex water management challenge
Starts 5 August 2019.

Course information

Taking lessons from Australia and across the globe, this course will encourage participants to understand policy reform and implementation of water management. The course is designed for participants from multiple disciplines, and a blend of theoretical learning and practical experiences in water reform and governance will be applied to explore international and local case studies.

Benefits to participants

By the end of this course participants will understand the Australian water reform and governance model and lessons that are relevant for different country contexts. Specifically, completion of the course will provide:

Introduction to WASH for Development

Developing foundation to support sustainable & equitable access to WASH
Starts 16 September 2019

Course information

Designed to empower practitioners with an understanding of the fundamentals of the WASH sector, this course introduces students to the core principles of planning, designing and implementing activities to improve sustainable and equitable access to domestic water supply and sanitation facilities, and improve hygiene behaviours.

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • identify social and economic differences in accessing WASH facilities and services
  • comprehend the breadth of health impacts from inadequate WASH and how they can be prevented

Team Leadership for Young Water Professionals

Equipping Young Water Professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to become outstanding team leaders

Course information

The International WaterCentre through a partnership with the Australian Water Association (AWA) is proud to offer this Online Team Leadership Course. This course meets the needs of young water professionals (YWP) using the latest online learning platforms, research findings and facilitation techniques

Benefits to participants

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand what leadership is, how it differs from management and problem-solving, and why it is important in the water sector.
  • understand and apply principles of self-leadership.
  • use principles and methods to guide their own development as emerging water leaders.
  • use new frameworks, models, tips and tools to improve their team leadership performance, especially when leading cross-boundary teams.

AWS International Water Stewardship Standard

Course Information

Join the IWC for the face-to-face delivery of the Foundation, Advanced and Specialist training in the AWS International Water Stewardship Standard and gain certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) to manage our shared water challenges.

The AWS Standard is a framework for implementing good water stewardship, by identifying and tackling water challenges at site- and catchment-level. The Standard is designed to support, recognise and reward collaborative efforts to manage and drive action on shared water challenges.

Benefits to participants

This course will develop participants’ knowledge and skills in water stewardship and the AWS Standard. After successfully completing this course, participants will deepen their understanding of:

  • How water stewardship can be situated within an overall suite of policy options for water management and contribute to organisational goals
  • Key elements of stewardship systems and how elements are implemented in the AWS water stewardship system
  • The range of risk and conformity tools that can support water stewardship
  • How water stewardship is being applied in different contexts around the world
  • How to work through the process of becoming a water steward and use the AWS Standard.

Certificates and Accreditation

Certificates of Completion will be given to participants who have actively participated in the training. Additionally, AWS offers accreditation opportunities to participants that successfully complete the Specialist level of the course and are looking to work with the AWS water stewardship system as one of the following service providers:
