Water Leadership Program

The Water Leadership Program helps emerging leaders to develop the ability to exert influence, drive change and advance challenging integrated water management projects – abilities associated with the most effective integrated water management leaders.

Program Outcomes

As well as a foundational understanding in all aspects of water management, completion of the program will provide participants with an:

  • Improved ability to drive change, especially when addressing ‘wicked problems’ that involve Integrated Water Management
  • Enhanced capacity to exercise influence in a variety of contexts

PROFESSIONAL OUTCOMES

Designed for emerging water leaders at the project to middle management level, this program is customised for the water sector to equip participants with: the ability to drive change when addressing ‘wicked problems’; exercise influence; improved capacity to demonstrate many of the leadership behaviours needed for future executive roles; and an enhanced ability to mentor and manage within their individual work context.

Program Delivery

The Water Leadership Program incorporates a flexible structure with direct significance to current management positions.

As a participant in the program you will complete pre-training exercises including a customised online 360-degree feedback process, two intensive face-to-face sessions, one-on-one coaching and mentor meetings. Monthly activities such as online discussions, readings and webinars are designed to promote continual development throughout the program. A final tailored one-on-one coaching session will end the program, resulting in a total of 17 days commitment, over nine months, to complete the program.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Designed to build your capacity to continually develop as a water industry leader you’re your career, this nine-month program features a balance between academic and real-world approaches to learning including:

  • Mentoring activities involving experienced water industry executives;
  • a sound research and theoretical basis, including conceptual models of effective water leaders, leadership processes and leadership development;
  • peer review of the program design, content and evaluation by leading industry practitioners and academics.

Scholarships – NOW OPEN

A range of scholarships are awarded annually to high calibre candidates who clearly demonstrate potential as future water leaders. These full and partial scholarships are available to domestic participants, including three full scholarships awarded annually, by the International WaterCentre in collaboration with industry sponsors for the Water Leadership Program. 

Who can apply (eligibility requirements)

Scholarship applications are open to team, project and middle managers in the Australian water sector who are Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand citizens currently working in Australia.

Our general eligibility criteria are:

  • Be a working professional in the water sector
  • English language proficiency
  • An ability to travel to Brisbane and attend both face-to-face training sessions on 11-15 February and 25-26 July 2019
  • Organisational support from current employer to attend the program (if currently employed)
  • A strong commitment to learning and personal development, including the ability to respond positively to feedback
  • A desire to complement their technical and management skills with advanced leadership capabilities
  • An aspiration to improve their ability to influence stakeholders and drive change in order to deliver more integrated forms of water management

AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS

International WaterCentre Water Leader Scholarship
  • One full scholarship from IWC (AU$9,500 fees + AU$2,000 towards travel)
  • Two half scholarships (AU$4,750 towards fees and AU$1,000 towards travel)
  • Applicants can be from anywhere in Australia and NZ as long as they comply with the eligibility requirements listed in the “who can apply” section above

 

Melbourne Water Leader Scholarship

  • Two full scholarships from Melbourne Water (AU$9,500 fees + AU$2,000 towards travel).
  • Applicants must currently be employed by a local government located within the Melbourne Water supply area. For more information view the Terms and Conditions for this scholarship, and list of eligible local governments.

Clearwater Leader Scholarship

  • Three full scholarships from Clearwater (AU$9,500 fees + AU$2,000 towards travel) for applicants from regional VIC.
  • One full scholarship from Clearwater (AU$9,500 fees + AU$2,000 towards travel) for applicants from metro Melbourne.
  • Two half scholarships (AU$4,750 towards fees and AU$1,000 towards travel) for applicants from anywhere in VIC.
  • Applicants must currently be employed by a local government, water authority or catchment management authority in Victoria. To view the eligibility criteria for these scholarships, please click here.

Stormwater NSW Leader Scholarship

  • One full scholarship from Stormwater NSW (AU$9,500 fees + AU$2,000 towards travel).
  • Applicants must currently be employed by a local government, water authority or catchment management authority in NSW. Applicants must also be Stormwater NSW members.

How to Apply

Prospective participants must meet the following prerequisites for entry into the program:

  • At least three years of experience working in the water industry/sector or have completed postgraduate research in the water sector that involved working closely with industry stakeholders
  • English language proficiency, as demonstrated by an officially recognised test of English language proficiency
  • Ability to attend the five days of face-to-face training and mentoring in Brisbane
  • If you are employed, organisational support to attend the program is preferred, but not essential

Program Costs

The Water Leadership Program fees cost AU$9500 (plus GST). This cost can be spread over two financial years if needed. In addition there are travel, accommodation and subsistence costs associated with attending face-to-face training in Brisbane (5 days in February and 2 days in July).

Scholarships are offered every year to assist emerging leaders, irrespective of financial circumstances. If you are unable to commit to the full nine-month program (or are unsuccessful in obtaining scholarship), you may be interested in IWC’s coaching services.
