Rej is an Ecosystem Management Specialist with the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources Biodiversity Management Bureau and joined the Master of Integrated Water Management Program full-time in 2017. Rej has worked on watershed and coastal resources management and believes that fragmented approaches to management have led to the unsustainable management of resources. He joins the program to further his knowledge and understanding of implementing holistic and integrated approaches to conservation and management of resources and exchange ideas with peers from around the world on how to address challenging water management problems.
Camaria is a Project Engineer at Caribbean Water Treatment Ltd and joined the Master of Integrated Water Management Program full-time in 2017. Camaria has worked with water utilities across the Caribbean to increase their ability to meet growing consumer demand with energy efficient solutions that deliver quantity and quality potable water. She joins the program to gain the water management skills and knowledge to complement her engineering background and position herself confidently to take a leading role in complex, cross-sector water projects. Camaria hopes to use her experience in the MIWM to utilise proven scientific methodologies to investigate issues, conduct impact assessments and provide leadership in achieving change.
Narelle is the Environmental Strategy Team Leader for Canterbury Bankstown Council and joined the Master of Integrated Water Management Program part-time in 2017. She is a leader in environmental education and place-based education and engagement, and has spent many years facilitating community participation in environmental programs. In 2011 Narelle was recognised by her peers, winning the Australian Association of Environmental Educator’s Environmental Educator of the Year NSW. Narelle joins the MIWM program to immerse herself in understanding the technical, social and economic rationale for making Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) ‘business-as-usual’ rather than an optional added extra in development.
Kathryn is a Planner with Sydney Water and joined the Master of Integrated Water Management Program part-time in 2017. She is passionate about empowering young water professionals to have the confidence and skills to be involved in developing robust and innovative solutions to water management challenges, and to take a seat at the decision-making table. Kathryn was awarded the Australian Water Association’s Young Water Professional of the Year award in 2016, is an International Water Association Emerging Water Leader and the Australia YWP Utility Segment Representative on the IWA’s Strategic Council. She joins us for the MIWM to increase her knowledge and ability to inform and influence in the water sector, and to provide direction on where she can channel her efforts to make improvements to sustainable water management in her career.
Michael is the International Rivers Director of Programs and joined the Master of Integrated Water Management Program part-time in 2016. He has over 20 years experience in international development working in forest campaigning, the environment movement, and building and managing river-basin and water management programs with Oxfam Australia and Oxfam International. Michael plans to use the MIWM to engage with peers from other sectors and, in focusing on integration, learn together, engage with different perspectives and gain more of an insight into current Australian water management and governance approaches.
Angela is a Finance and Economics Senior Advisor for GHD and joined the Master of Integrated Water Management Program part-time in 2016. Her professional path has been based on her long standing interest in financial and environmental markets and the governance frameworks that support them, Her experience includes managing the debt/asset portfolio of SA Water, developing a water trading platform for irrigators and irrigation companies in the Murray Darling Basin with Waterfind, and project managing the development of the water markets online portal and release of Australia’s first National Water Account in 2010 with the Bureau of Meteorology as part of the national water reform agenda. Angela hopes to use the MIWM to contribute to, and be effective in, changing the support frameworks required by water managers to collect, analyse, evaluate and make decisions through the application of integrated water management solutions and water market mechanisms.
Every year, the International WaterCentre (IWC) in collaboration with several industry sponsors offer several Water Leadership Scholarships to assist talented emerging water leaders in organisations with limited resources for professional development.
Anne is the Waterways Asset Management Programs Area Lead for Melbourne Water. She is motivated in her current role by the new challenges her team faces as they work to deliver on projects that have never been done before. Through the program she is looking to gain a set of tools and strategies that she can apply in day-to-day management and when difficult situations arise.
Anthony is the Strategic Assets Manager for North East Water, Victoria. He is motivated in his current role by embedding a systems approach to Asset Management and building collaborative partnerships with customers. Anthony acknowledges that managing multiple teams and influencing change while also achieving corporate objectives is a key leadership challenge, and through the Water Leadership Program hopes to elevate his leadership impact, learn new frameworks and tools to deliver results and expand his effectiveness in building an environment of collaboration, accountability and performance.
Catherine is an Environmental Water Resources Officer with Victoria’s North East Catchment Management Authority. She is motivated in her current role by her opportunity to drive positive change in water management in Victoria through environmental water and water resource management frameworks. Through the program Catherine hopes to develop her leadership skills to exert more influence on the private water industry, for Water Management Plan and Local Management Plan reviews, and to contribute to projects under Victoria’s recently launched Integrated Water Management framework.
Dean is an Asset Engineer at Western Water, Victoria. He recognises that as an emerging leader there is a steep learning curve in his role and being open to new ideas and challenges is important to building confidence in areas outside his comfort zone. Dean believes the Water Leadership Program will help him develop the skills he needs to influence others through change management and build his confidence as a leader in his current role and as his career progresses.
Travis is the Environment Coordinator for the Colac Otway Shire Council. He is passionate about protecting and enhancing our environmental assets, such as waterways, threatened species and biodiversity and is motivated in his current role by his ability to oversee a variety of projects that help provide an environmental and community benefit. Travis believes his major leadership challenge is to take advantage of the opportunities that are present to integrate more environmental and Integrated Water Management concepts into the work that the council delivers. Through the Water Leadership Program he believes he will learn the skills and strategies necessary to influence others and ensure these opportunities are realised for the benefit of the Council and the community.
Andrew is a Domestic Wastewater Management Officer for the Baw Baw Shire Council in Victoria. In his current role he is motivated by the opportunity to apply his catchment management background to improve the management of onsite domestic wastewater in the Baw Baw Shire. Being the only person within the council with knowledge of Integrated Water Management, Andrew sees raising the profile and importance of Integrated Water Management as his biggest leadership challenge. Through the Water Leadership Program he is looking forward to learning more about the different leadership styles and learning new techniques and approaches to champion Integrated Water Management within his organisation.
Stephanie is the Water Sensitive Urban Design Officer for the Yarra Ranges Council in Victoria. She is motivated in her role by the continuous conversations, negotiations and problem-solving with colleagues of various technical backgrounds brought into every project to achieve maximum benefits while reducing potential risks. While Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is not a new discipline for the council, Stephanie identifies the practical implementation of the WSUD program, including communicating technical information convincingly to influence programs and processes, as a major leadership challenge she faces. She anticipates that through the Water Leadership Program she will learn the tools and knowledge to be able to address these challenges as her career progresses, and also looks forward to the insights and professional feedback offered through the 360 peer survey.
Lalji is an Operations Engineer with the Kempsey Shire Council in New South Wales. He is motivated by the diversity of his current role, both the technical and non-technical aspects and people management. He believes the ability to steer his team positively through change and contribute to the organisational transformation currently underway at the Council as one of his major leadership challenges and believes the Water Leadership Program offers a highly relevant program that will assist him not only in his current role but also in his future leadership within the Australian water sector.
Anthony is the Innovation Delivery Project Manager at Yarra Valley Water in Victoria. Water is his passion. He believes water is a binding force between our communities and the environment, and that the water industry sits in the middle of this exchange. Anthony loves testing and exploring what is possible in the industry with a view to improving accessibility, equity and sustainability. He sees his role as a change agent, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and making change, while keeping in mind that change impacts everyone differently and bringing everyone along, as one of his leadership challenges. Anthony is seeking to develop his ability to engage people and support them on the journey of change through his participation in the Water Leadership Program.
Since 2008 participants in the Master of Integrated Water Management Program have successfully delivered more than 200 projects in 45 countries in collaboration with over 140 organisations world-wide.
During their final semester (full-time) or final two semesters (part-time), students design and undertake self-directed project work aimed at consolidating and applying the concepts, principles and methodologies they have learned throughout the MIWM Program.
