IWC, on behalf of the Department of Environment and Natural Resource Management, facilitated stakeholder workshops and processes to identify the most appropriate management arrangements to support the implementation of the South East Queensland (SEQ) Natural Resource Management Plan.

Project Category: Consultancy

Key Areas of Work: Training IWM,Training leadership,Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH),River Restoration

Project Date: Oct 24, 2010

The SEQ Natural Resource Management CEOs Committee endorsed the recommendation facilitated by IWC for the formation of a Science Integration Panel and Executive Officers Group.

Science Integration Panel

The role of the Science Integration Panel was to oversee the integrity of science that supports policy and planning in relation to natural resource management in the SEQ region. The Science Integration Panel worked very closely with the Executive Officers Group that provided integrated policy/planning advice to the Natural Resource Management CEOs Committee. This was facilitated through the provision of sound information and decision support tools that could be applied across the regional planning area to ensure informed policy and planning.

Executive Officers Group

The role of the Executive Officers Group was to oversee the integration of the science, policy and planning activities of accountable agencies in relation to natural resource management in the SEQ region. The Executive Officers Group worked closely with both the Science Integration Panel and the Regional Implementation Group to provide integrated policy/planning advice to the Natural Resource Management CEOs Committee.

Impacts

The framework may be used in many different situations where policy can be informed by knowledge for better outcomes.

With latest research to inform policy and decision-making, councils, state government, industry and other organisations can be confident they are using the most up-to-date knowledge available to achieve the best possible results, and to continually reassess targets and actions as new research findings are made.

The policy-knowledge integration framework ensures cross-organisational collaboration, collaboration between research, management and monitoring, and a process resulting in well-informed management decisions based on targeted scientific research and an integrated monitoring program.

What is science-policy interface

Science-policy interface refers to the exchange between policy-makers and researchers in a two-way dialogue that enables policy information needs to be determined and appropriate research to be produced to meet and inform these needs. Integrated monitoring programs are critical to the implementation of any policy, so that information on the impact of policies is assessed. Achieving this interactive science-policy interface enables water management based on targeted scientific research and including integrated monitoring programs.
