At the International WaterCentre, we focus on strengthening both an individual and institutional capacity in integrated water management. This is built on our strong foundation in education, combined with expert knowledge from around Australia and across disciplines.

We offer online, short and custom-design courses tailored specifically to the needs of water professionals and organisations.

Custom-designed Training

IWC custom-designed development programs are aimed at current and future water professionals with a vision for sustainable and integrated water management. In our programs we:

  • Work with organisastions and groups to identify specific training needs and develop tailor-made training programs to build the required skills and knowledge
  • Build on participants professional experience and improve their ability to solve water-related problems in an integrated fashion
  • Combine interactive classroom learning with experiential learning through field studies, to build both knowledge and skills

Australian Awards Fellowship Round 15

Enhancing Peru’s water supply practices through Integrated Water Management

Professionals working in water-supply management in Peru spent three and a half weeks with the International WaterCentre in Australia as part of the Australian Awards Fellowship Round 15. Their objective was to increase their integrated water management tools and knowledge for the improvement of water-supply practices in urban and rural Peru.

Building Water Leadership Capacity

A Short Course for Consulting Staff

This short course was custom designed for seven staff of Alluvium, a consultancy firm that specialises in the protection, rehabilitation and restoration of rivers and catchments. It also drew on aspects the International WaterCentre’s award-winning Water Leadership Program and Master of Integrated Water Management.

Monitoring and Assessing for Health of Estuary and Coastal Waters

Australian Leadership Award Fellowship 2012

In 2012 the International WaterCentre hosted 15 professionals from the Pearl River Water Resources Commission (PRWRC) during a professional development program with the intent to gain new insights and knowledge into monitoring and assessing health of estuary and coastal waters in the context of integrated water management. This program was designed to build capacity towards an integrative approach to waterways management and water resource management based on stakeholder engagement and evidence-based decision making.

Our online training courses cultivate innovative solutions to complex water management challenges by combining real-world experience in integrated water management with engaging courses, delivered by leading industry experts.

Throughout these courses, we share lessons learnt from working with organisations at an international level, and evidence-based strategies designed and implemented to improve integrated water management. Introduction to WASH for Development

Building capacity in WASH service delivery for development

Course Information

Designed to empower practitioners with an understanding of the fundamentals of the WASH sector, this course introduces students to the core principles of planning, designing and implementing activities to improve sustainable and equitable access to domestic water supply and sanitation facilities, and improve hygiene behaviours.

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify social and economic differences in accessing WASH facilities and services
  • Comprehend the breadth of health impacts from inadequate WASH and how they can be prevented
  • Understand the historical development of sanitation
  • Recognise environmental, social and technical facets of urban and rural sanitation
  • Communicate current approaches aiming to achieve sustainable WASH services through good technical, institutional and economic principles
  • Examine the issue of integrating behaviour change in WASH and understand the current philosophy in hygiene promotion
  • Grasp key issues in the WASH sector for the sustainable development goal period

WASH and Behaviour Change

Integrating behaviour change to improve WASH outcomes

Course Information

This course gives participants the knowledge and skills they need to effectively incorporate behaviour strategies into WASH program design and delivery. The course fosters an understanding of when behaviour change strategies should be integrated into WASH program, and provides the tools to guide the integration of behaviour change into WASH programs.

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the need for, and role of, behaviour change integration into WASH programs
  • Identify alternatives to education and awareness strategies for changing behaviours
  • Plan and design interventions that address risky WASH behaviours, and
  • Implement and evaluate behaviour change interventions within WASH programs.

Foundations of Water Stewardship

Supporting sustainable water management

Course Information

Addressing water scarcity and the deterioration of our waterways requires a diferent approach to water management. Join the IWC for Foundations of Water Stewardship and gain certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) to manage our shared water challenges.

This four-week online course equips participants with the knowledge required to implement and promote water stewardship. You will be introduced to water stewardship and the AWS Standard, and how this innovative approach can support diverse water management goals and sustainability objectives.

As a verified corporate delivery team, the IWC is pleased to offer ‘Foundations of Water Stewardship,’ the first level of the program for users and promoters of the AWS water stewardship system.

ABOUT THE COURSE

4-week course, commencing 2018 | Delivered by: Declan Hearne and Pablo Orams
No prerequisites required.

  • Participants will gain international accreditation from AWS in Water Stewardship. Completion of the course will deepen participants understanding of:
  • How water stewardship can be situated within an overall suite of policy options for water management and contribute to organisational goals
  • Key elements of stewardship systems and how elements are implemented in the AWS water stewardship system
  • The range of risk and conformity tools that can support water stewardship
  • How water stewardship is being applied in different contexts around the world
  • How to work through the process of becoming a water steward and use the AWS Standard.

Water Reform and Governance

Driving innovative solutions to complex water management challenges

Course Information

Taking lessons from Australia and across the globe, this course will support participants to understand policy reform in different contexts and levels of government. Consideration is given to the principles of water reform, along with a look at the institutions and processes for the planning and allocation of water resources.

The course is designed for participants from multiple disciplines and draws on practical examples to demonstrate how water reform processes are successful when they are context driven, inclusive of direct and indirect users of water, take a whole-of-water cycle approach, and considers multiple societal outcomes.

No prerequisites required.

By the end of this course participants will have gained knowledge of a number of water reform and governance models and lessons that are relevant for different country contexts. Specifically, completion of the course will provide:

  • Increased knowledge of successful and failed approaches to water reform and governance
  • Greater awareness and understanding of water reform and governance principles
  • Understanding of how reform can deliver multiple benefits to urban and rural areas, the environment, and communities
  • Improved skills in analysis of governance frameworks and stakeholder engagement
  • Increased capacity to use water governance principles to drive innovative solutions to complex water management issues
