First group of Fellows from Fiji on North Stradbroke Island in October

The International WaterCentre will host five Australia Award Fellowships from Fiji, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Colombia between October 2017 and May 2018 to support the professional development of water professionals across a number of partner organisations and government departments within these countries.

As part of each Fellowship a group of water professionals from the countries selected will join the IWC in Australia for approximately four-weeks on a capacity development program that will include workshops, field trips, presentations and lectures. During the program the IWC will support Fellows in the development of Change Projects; project plans that outline a vision for change, and the actions needed to achieve it. It is envisioned that through these Change Projects, Fellows can help drive positive change in how their country manages water.

Australia Awards

The five Fellowships awarded to the International WaterCentre are among 94 Fellowship grants involving 1,136 fellows across 48 Australian host organisations provided by the Australian Government in 2018 to emerging leaders from 40 countries in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Australian hosts include government agencies, universities, research centres, national sports organisations, NGOs and industry bodies.

The Australian Government Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon Julie Bishop MP said the awards offer the next generation of global leaders an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development to help them contribute to development in their home countries.

“Australia’s international alumni are influencers and leaders in their home countries, and through our Global Alumni Strategy, we grow a community that strengthens and maintains our regional connections,” Minister Bishop said.

“Together, the New Colombo Plan and the Australia Awards deepen Australia’s engagement with the region and facilitate genuine two-way educational exchange,” she said.
