IWC sponsors AWA YWP Qld Mentoring Program launch
In direct response to concerns that the Australian water industry would face serious labour shortages in the medium to long term future, the concept of an industry wide mentoring program was initiated by the AWA YWP Qld Network. It is hoped that this program will not only help with the retention of graduates but also of those members that are still finding their feet in the industry.
The program launch, held at the Ship Inn at Southbank, was a great success. Sixty people attended - 30 mentors (senior water professionals) and 30 mentees (junior to mid-career professionals).
IWC's Dr Brian McIntosh gave the keynote presentation, an information session about the mentoring program and what participants could expect from the mentor-mentee relationship. Alycia Moore, an IWC Masters Alumnus, spoke of the great value she received by taking part in the mentoring program in 2012.
IWC would like to thank the AWA QLD Branch and the YWP QLD network for giving us the opportunity to support this wonderful initiative and take part in the evening.
The mentoring program runs from early March until the end of the year. Pairings are made based upon a questionnaire each participant fills out, asking about things such as skills and experience (for mentors), and career goals and expectations (for mentees). Participants include a wide range of people from different areas of the water industry, and with different experiences and skills.
