Dr Peter Oliver's Retirement Lecture, Brisbane, Thursday 23 August

Dr Peter Oliver, Senior Lecturer, International WaterCentre; Adjunct Associate Professor (School of Chemical Engineering, The University of Queensland); and Healthy Waterways Champion 2012

In his 30 year career as a teacher, community volunteer, extension officer, researcher, activist, author and musician, Dr. Oliver has always aimed to enlighten, emancipate and empower the people with whom he has been privileged to work. He has learnt much from such work, knowing that good teachers are ones who respect and learn from those around them. Fun has been a life-long feature of his work. Learning and researching should be fun! He has always enjoyed the support of his family, particularly his wife, Ann.

He has worked with good people in wonderful places - including with secondary maths and science students at Surat (South-Western Queensland); environmental and outdoor education students at Maroon Outdoor Education Centre; young folk at Maleny High School; students at various universities throughout Queensland and further afield overseas; coordinating a major ARC project on Engaged Goverment involving three universities, two levels of government and three disciplinary lenses; leading waterwatch, landcare and integrated water management workshop participants and research projects in suburban Brisbane backyards, Maroochy River canelands, Condamine creeks, the marvellous Mary River and Pumicestone Passage waters, as well as waterways in Japan, Viet Nam, Indonesia and the often virtual, greatman-made river and coastal waters of Libya.

In this work he has been lucky enough to make many wonderful friends. He believes effective learning and positive change occur when people work together in partnership - sharing and linking risk, opportunity, reward, and resources to achieve mutually desired, but otherwise, unachievable goals. He also believes the word ‘partnership’ is much over-used!

To acknowledge and engage with his work, the International WaterCentre and the University of Queensland's School of Chemical Engineering are very pleased to invite you to Dr. Peter Oliver’s retirement lecture. The lecture will be interactive and most importantly, fun. So, hold on to your hats and come along for a creative, thought-provoking, entertaining afternoon. We’ll see how good this bloke actually is...
