Dr Peter Oliver - Champion of Waterways
This prize recognises exceptional individuals who make or have made major and sustained contributions to improving waterway health.
Starting as a high school teacher 30 years ago, Peter’s career path took him into the water industry, where he combined his passion for teaching and learning with integrated water management. Now recognised as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School Chemical Engineering at The University of Queensland, Peter leads educational development and training products for IWC.
From Pumicestone Passage to the Mary River, during a lifetime in the industry Peter has been involved in many research initiatives. His resume attests to innumerable hours spent improving waterways in South East Queensland.
With a unique ability to bring people together and raise awareness, Peter is a true catalyst for change. His inspiring song ‘Dugong Rock’ raised awareness for the plight of the endangered dugong. All over the world people (including IWC staff) were 'Shaking it for the Dugong' when Peter ran a competition for groups to create their own film-clip to the song on YouTube.
Peter is well respected by his peers. His unique approach to all work endeavours, passion for integrated water management and larger-than-life personality has touched many lives.
Peter took to the stage at the Healthy Waterways Awards in front of family and peers and broke into song. The room pulsed with foot-stomping and hand-clapping as he gave a wonderful rendition of ‘Dugong Rock’ in acceptance of his award.
IWC congratulates Peter on this very special achievement. IWC Chief Executive Officer Mark Pascoe said, "Dr Peter Oliver has been one of the foundation stones of the International WaterCentre since the day he walked into the office four years and a half ago to join the team. IWC would not be what it is today without his inspirational leadership, deep trans-disciplinary experience in natural resource management, quirky sense of humour, and the jokes, laughter and music that Peter brings."
