Two researchers from the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences have arrived in Brisbane for a six-week technical placement as part of the IWC’s River Health and Environmental Flow in China project.
Chinese researchers take up placement in Australia for River Health & Environmental Flow in China

Dr Kong, Dr Fran Sheldon & Dr Qu at ARI

Dr Weijing Kong and Dr Xiaodong Qu will be working with the Australian Rivers Institute (ARI) team led by Professor Stuart Bunn based at Griffith University, and also with The University of Queensland’s Peter Hanington.

Over the six-week placement they plan to develop a pilot Environmental Health Monitoring Program (EHMP) and Report Card for the Liao River in China, using data analysis, assessment and background reports on the river’s water quality and biological health.

Dr Kong has research interests in watershed and riparian ecology, and Dr Qu’s research lies in the areas of river, estuary and coastal environment.

While in Australia the two researchers plan to tour stream catchments in South East Queensland (SEQ) used in the SEQ Healthy Waterways EHMP to view typical examples of lower-catchment & urbanised streams.

They will also visit sites with varying Report Card grades, participate in freshwater field sampling activities with Griffith University staff, visit Moreton Bay estuary with University of Queensland staff, and tour analytical laboratories, while developing the Report Card for the Liao River pilot study.

The River Health and Environmental Flow in China project is part of the Australia China Environment Development Partnership (ACEDP).
