Brisbane River transformation an example for the world

The story of Brisbane River’s transformation from waste dump to vibrant centre for the city is an inspiring example of partnership and collective action for waterways improvement.

Once dangerously contaminated with sewage and chemicals, progressive changes to management of Brisbane River mean that marine life is now returning. Water quality is visibly improving and experts say the central business district stretch of the waterway could be officially declared safe for swimming within 10 years.

IWC Partner organisation, the Southeast Queensland Healthy Waterways Partnership is a key driver providing initiative, focus and scientific rigour to conserve ecosystem values of the river. International interest in the success story of the Brisbane River grows each year, attracting people to the annual International Riversymposium
