Australia - a continent or an archipelago?

ABC News talks to Australia's Ambassador to the US, Kim Beazley, IWC CEO, Mark Pascoe, World Bank's Manager of the central unit for water, Julia Bucknall, and former Chairman of Australia's National Water Commission, Ken Matthews, at a World Bank drought conference in the United States.

The irony of Australian water experts gathering at a drought conference while their own country is reeling from recent flood devastation was not lost on conference attendees. 

"It's been pointed out to me once or twice that I no longer represent a continent; I represent an archipelago," said Kim Beazley, Australia's Ambassador to the US.

However, it is these very extremes of water challenges, according to Julia Bucknal, Manager of World Bank's central unit for water, that make Australia's water expertise so interesting to developing countries like Africa, India and China who have similarly huge water challenges.
