2016 IWC Masters students visit North Stradbroke Island
The field trip to the popular island, 30km southeast of Brisbane, marked the beginning of the IWC’s Master of Integrated Water Management program for 2016. 32 new full-time and 17 part-time students from all over the world, joined the IWC’s team of lecturers and staff to explore the island and learn from guest presenters and community stakeholders on the island’s water challenges.
The IWC Senior Lecturer and Education Program Manager Dr Brian McIntosh said the students learnt about the relationships between the community, ecology, economy and water on the island and were introduced to the concept of integrated water management.
"This field trip is always a wonderful way for students to get to know one another and to immerse themselves in the complexities of integrated water management in a beautiful setting with a wealth of learning opportunities," Dr Brian McIntosh said.
Guest presenters included representatives from the Queensland Government, the Quandamooka people, Stradbroke Island Water Action Group and the global minerals/sand mining company Sibelco.
Each representative gave their views on current environmental management practices and discussed the future of the island.
Following the three day field trip, students are now attending introductory lectures and workshops at The University of Queensland until the end of the week.
We asked our new cohort why they chose to study with the IWC
"I wanted to do a program at a Masters level which was applicable to my current role and broadens my leadership potential within this industry. I also have a personal interest in international development."
"I chose this program for the transdisciplinary focus, global reach of students and emphasis on sustainable systems in water management."
"I think this program will inspire me to think critically to drive necessary change in the water industry. It will help me to develop my skills to make a difference."
