Developing future water leaders

Over 60 Queensland (QLD) water industry professionals gathered in the office of Jacobs in Brisbane on Thursday 26 May to launch the Australian Water Association (AWA) Queensland branch’s YWP mentoring program.

The IWC Education Director Dr Brian McIntosh spoke on the why, what and how of mentoring and facilitated a series of workshop activities to engage the event participants in thinking about, and planning how, they will get the most out of their mentor-mentee relationship.

As well as networking, a particular highlight of the evening was the speed dating activity where prospective mentors and mentees shared hopes, fears and ideas about how to get the most out of mentoring – 60 water industry professionals up close and personal.

33 mentor-mentee pairs have been formed for the 2016 QLD YWP mentoring program and almost all were present for the launch event.

The AWA Young Water Professionals

The Australian Water Association has active Young Water Professionals groups in all the Australian States and Territories. They provide a forum where YWPs (aged typically from 25-35) can network, learn from each other and from industry experts, and in doing so, develop themselves professionally and personally. The Queensland YWP President, Alycia Moore, is an IWC Masters of Integrated Water Management alumnus and the IWC is proud to support the learning and development of YWPs in Queensland and beyond through workshops, facilitating mentoring programs and running an online team leadership course targeted at YWPs.
