The field trip is part of the ‘Science of Water‘ module students take in Semester One of the Master of Integrated Water Management program. The module introduces the fundamental science underpinning the understanding of the whole of catchment water cycle, including water quality and water treatment for human consumption.

Student began the day at the Wivenhoe Dam, South East Queensland (SEQ)’s largest water storage and main water supply for Brisbane and the greater Ipswich area.

Dan Garcia from Seqwater led a discussion on governance and water supply challenges to the people of SEQ. Students also visited erosion management sites downstream of Wivenhoe and discussed management and restoration approaches to maintain water quality and quantity.

In the afternoon, students visited various locations along the Brisbane River catchment to learn about water-sensitive urban design and initiatives for retrofitting industrial or drainage sites at parks, wetlands and other green areas.

“This day was a wonderful opportunity for the students to meet key stakeholders involved in managing a complex river system that deals with pollution and erosion from agricultural and urban settings” said IWC Lecturer (Flexible Delivery Lead) Peter Wegener.
