Conversations in WASH

Conversations in WASH

‘Conversations in WASH’ presents the outcomes of a series of workshops held at international conferences to discuss some of the controversial messages presented at the WASH Conference 2011.
Conversations in WASH

‘WASH Conference 2011: Towards Sustainability in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene’ held in Brisbane (May 2011) focused on the sustainability of approaches being used in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions. This focus recognised that despite efforts in recent years toward scaling up and reaching targets, it is vital to ensure that sustainable, long-term service provision remains the overall goal.

The relative sustainability of approaches to WASH was clearly a provocative issue, sparking debates and discussion both within and outside of the sessions and plenaries. These highly interactive discussions led to the concept of ‘Conversations in WASH’, to bring key ideas that emerged from the conference to new audiences, and further ground-truth, challenge, and explore these ideas.

The ‘Conversations in WASH’ discussions were undertaken at two international conferences: the ‘2011 Water and Health Conference: Science, Policy and Innovation’ hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (October 2011, USA), and the ‘2nd International Water Association Development Congress & Exhibition’ (November 2011, Malaysia).

More than 80 people participated in the ‘Conversations in WASH’ workshops, representing the full diversity of organisations involved in WASH. The discussions were lively and inclusive, and provided a rare opportunity for practitioners and researchers to debate some controversial WASH questions. To further share those ideas, those continuing conversations are summarised in “Conversations in WASH”.
